A-FP Press Release | Michael O’Bernicia Wins Award at IndieFEST Film Awards

Critically-acclaimed, maverick British filmmaker, Michael O’Bernicia [The Great British Mortgage Swindle, The Three Faced Terrorist], has won a prestigious Award of Recognition from the IndieFEST Film Awards. The award was given for O’Bernicia’s outstanding achievement in producing, writing, editing and directing the exciting micro-budget feature film, Nefarious, a fast-moving, funny yet ultimately tragic European thriller cum road movie shot in 2005, starring Danish legend Kim Bodnia [The Bridge, Killing Eve], alongside Dutch star Tygo Gernandt [The Last Kingdom] and newcomers Conor Woodman, Spek and Guy Porritt [Ted Lasso], about two hedonistic outlaws and their quest to open up a coffeeshop in Amsterdam.

The unflinchingly anti-establishment British filmmaker had this to say about winning the award: “Twenty years ago this February, we shot Nefarious over seventeen non-consecutive days, in London, Amsterdam, Newcastle, Durham and the Teesdale Valley, for a little over £17,000. Suffice to say, I would never have won the IndieFEST Award of Recognition without having had the privilege of making the film with a brilliant, passionate, committed and superhuman cast and crew. This award is just as much a tribute to their work as is it to mine, two decades after we made the impossible happen.”

The IndieFEST Film Awards recognizes film, television, videography and new media professionals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in craft and creativity, and those who produce standout entertainment or contribute to profound social change. Entries are judged by highly qualified professionals in the film and television industry. Information about the IndieFEST and a list of recent winners can be found at www.theindiefest.com.

In winning an IndieFEST Film Award, Nefarious and Michael O’Bernicia join the ranks of other high-profile winners of this internationally respected award, including 2021 Academy Award winner, If Anything Happens I Love You by Laura Dern, Will McCormack and Michael Govier, Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson as the narrator of Love Thy Nature, A Path Appears documentary, featuring Oscar-winner George Clooney and Blake Lively, Radical Grace, executive produced by Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon, a searing expose, Davids and Goliath, by Peabody winner Leon Lee, and Touched with Fire starring Katie Holmes.

Rick Prickett, who chairs The IndieFEST Film Awards, had this to say about the latest winners, “The IndieFEST is not an easy award to win. Entries are received from around the world from powerhouse companies to remarkable new talent. The IndieFEST helps set the standard for craft and creativity. The judges were pleased with the exceptional high quality of entries. The goal of The IndieFEST Film Awards is to help winners achieve the recognition they deserve.”

Nefarious is set for its UK Theatrical Premiere on Saturday 01 March 2025. To book tickets to see the film, which has already been described as ‘a cult classic waiting to happen’, check out A-FP Box Office:
